Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is the operation carried out to reshape the abdominal wall and consists in the removal of adipose tissue and excess skin present in the abdomen. Very often it is also necessary to act on the muscle fascial wall due to its relaxation. The operation consists of a real lift of the abdominal wall with a final suture in the pubic region, which can normally be contained in a swimsuit.

Risks

Complications consist of infections (to be treated with antibiotic therapy), hematomas, seromas (which must be drained if necessary), thrombophlebitis of the lower limbs (the risk of which is minimized with early mobilization of the patient). Sometimes poor healing can occur which can lead to significant scarring that requires a second corrective surgery.

The surgery

The surgical procedure takes from 2 to 4 hours depending on the extent of the defect to be corrected. Commonly the surgical incision extends from one iliac spine to the other, passing immediately above the pubic region. Then the skin and subcutaneous tissues are separated from the abdominal wall, extending the separation up to the ribs. The muscles are reconnected to each other and the skin is then stretched downwards and its excess portion is removed. A second incision is made around the navel to free it and move it. In partial abdominoplasties (mini-abdominoplasties) this incision can be avoided. Drainage pipes are generally left in situ.

The new look

Abdominoplasty, whether partial or complete, gives excellent results to those patients who have problems with excess skin or relaxed muscles. Expectations must therefore be realistic and one must be prepared for a long and important scar. Abdominoplasty can change your appearance and restore that lost self-confidence, but it does not necessarily change your look according to your desires or change the way the people around you behave.
