Otoplasty and hair transplant in Naples

Otoplasty

This is an operation that serves to modify the projection of the auricles which appear excessively prominent. It is possible to carry out the operation as early as the age of 7, even under local anesthesia, with the support of the anesthetist. Through an incision made in the retro-auricular sulcus, the cartilage is isolated and remodeled with the aim of reducing the projection of the auricle and making it less visible. After 48 hours, it is possible to return to normal activities but it is preferable to wear a moderately compressive dressing for 4 or 5 days.

Risks

If otoplasty is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, complications are rare and usually minor. The most serious complication is an infection of the cartilage which can cause alterations and therefore jeopardize the final result. It is normally well controlled with pharmacological therapy.

The surgery

Whatever technique is used, the surgical procedure takes approximately one hour.
To correct the anthelix, an incision is made behind the ear, through which the cartilaginous structure to be remodeled is reached. We then proceed to redefine the anthelix by exploiting the elasticity and memory characteristics of the cartilage, without removing any portion of it and without using stitches, so as to avoid possible recurrences. The scar remains only in the posterior portion and is thus perfectly camouflaged. For small patients, absorbable stitches can be used so as not to create the problem of their removal. A bandage must be placed to protect the operated area. For the concha reduction method (therefore with a well-defined fold of the anthelix), a full-thickness crescent of tissue is removed from inside the auricle which determines the proximity of the ear to the head. In this case the scar is located both behind and front, but is still well camouflaged. Also for this technique it is advisable to use a protective bandage.

The new look

It is important to remember that the objective of the surgical intervention is a good correction, which is not synonymous with perfection and that, above all, a perfect symmetry of the two sides does not exist in nature.
Nonetheless, if expectations are realistic, the correction of protruding ears is one of the interventions that gives the patient the most satisfaction.

Hair transplant

Baldness is an extremely common problem among men and women. There are various types of intervention, but hair transplantation represents in many cases the only valid treatment for solving the problem. It consists of taking hair from the occipital area (nape) of the subject and reimplanting them as mini and micro-grafts in the areas where they are not present. The nuchal incision heals well and, once covered with hair, is well hidden. Mini-grafts have 3 or 4 follicles with their hair, while micro-grafts have 1 or 2 at most. The possibility of using one or the other and their distribution is dictated by the surgeon's experience. The operation is carried out under local anesthesia, after carrying out clinical examinations and lasts three or more hours.

In cases of particularly extensive baldness it is preferable to divide the transplant into two or more sessions to obtain a better aesthetic effect. Immediately after the operation, a bandage is applied and left undisturbed for 2 or 3 days. A definitive and correct evaluation of the intervention can be carried out within a few months, i.e. the time necessary for good regrowth. Autotransplantation, carried out with modern techniques, is a safe and effective method and ensures long-lasting results.
